What is Solution-focused brief therapy?

Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) is a flexible and individually-tailored ‘talking’ therapy.  SFBT assumes that you are the expert on your life and experiences.  Therefore, you set the outcomes you want from our sessions and decide when these have been achieved.

What do you talk about?

It is not necessary to go into detail about the past. Instead of focusing on problems and the past, our focus is on working towards the future that you want. However,  we understand that some service users may wish to talk about their experience and we can hear anything you want us to know.

How many sessions can I have?

We start with an offer of six sessions, with the understanding that we can offer more if this would be helpful for you.  SFBT is tailored to you – you can choose how often you have the sessions. Positive change is usually experienced after the first session, and some people have found one or two sessions enough.

SFBT assumes that you have the resources and skills you need to achieve the outcomes you want – it may just be that you haven’t realised it yet!

What happens in a session?

In the first session you will choose what you want the outcomes of our sessions to be and we look at what is already working well for you.  You then decide where you are now in relation to where you want to be. Service users often say the first session brings clarity, confidence and a sense of hope and possibility for the future. Future sessions explore the changes that are taking place.

In the final session, we review what you have achieved and remind ourselves how you did this.  If you think there are still times where you might run into difficulties, we also look at how you might overcome these. Finally, we invite you back for follow-up sessions at three months and six months.

Sessions are currently available face to face in Bristol, or by telephone for those outside of Bristol.
